Sensory Integration as a Foundation for Supporting the Development of Children with Postural and Neurodevelopmental Difficulties

Proper processing of sensory information forms the foundation of a child’s motor, emotional, and cognitive development. Disorders in the reception and integration of sensory stimuli can lead to difficulties in maintaining proper posture, reduced motor efficiency, problems with balance and coordination, as well as challenges in social functioning. This lecture will present the role of Sensory Integration (SI) therapy in supporting children with developmental delays, postural disorders, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADHD, and other neurodevelopmental conditions. The mechanisms through which the vestibular, proprioceptive, and tactile systems influence the development of postural control will be discussed, along with practical examples of collaboration between Sensory Integration therapists and physiotherapists.

KATIS – A Therapeutic Assistant: An Innovative Tool for the Early Identification of Developmental Delays in Young Children

Early identification of developmental difficulties is one of the key factors determining the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions. KATIS – the Computerized Sensory Integration Therapy Assistant – is an innovative tool designed to support professionals in the observation, analysis, and interpretation of a child’s functioning. During this presentation, participants will learn about the practical applications of the KATIS system in therapeutic, diagnostic, and developmental screening settings. The session will explore the assessment of a child’s sensory, postural, and functional development, as well as the benefits of incorporating digital technologies into contemporary rehabilitation and therapeutic practice.

The Relationship Between Postural Alignment and Sensory Integration in Early School-Aged Children

The presentation will focus on a contemporary perspective on the relationship between body posture and sensory integration processes in early school-aged children. The importance of proper postural control in child development and the role of sensory systems in shaping stable and efficient body posture will be discussed.Particular attention will be paid to the latest classification of postural disorders developed by Jacek Wilczyński, which emphasizes the need to view postural defects not only from a biomechanical perspective but also from a neurophysiological one. The characteristic features of individual types of postural disorders and their potential associations with sensory processing difficulties will be presented. The presentation will also address the current state of knowledge regarding the prevalence of postural defects in children and the risk factors contributing to their development. The objectives and assumptions of an ongoing research project investigating the relationship between body posture and sensory integration in children aged 7–9 years will be outlined, along with the potential application of modern diagnostic tools in the functional assessment of children. This presentation aims to explore whether observed postural abnormalities may constitute one of the manifestations of sensory integration disorders and to highlight the importance of considering this relationship in diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic interventions for school-aged children.
